Maybe it's because I have a birthday in this season. Maybe because Hallowe'en comes at the end of October. Maybe it is the colors of the leaves as they turn russet and red, the pumpkins glowing in the fields, the glad sounds of kids on the playground, back in school with old friends and making new friends...whatever it is, I love fall best.
When I was a kid, my mother killed "two birds with one stone," by making me a birthday cake in the shape of a witch, complete with licorice broomstick and colored coconut hair. My party was usually in costume. Who cared that I turned seven or eight nearly a week from the actual Hallowe'en? A theme was a theme!
Now, I read that Hallowe'en is the biggest grown-up "holiday" of the year, with costume rental stores doing major business. Everyone, it seems, wants to be a fairy princess or a knight-in-shining-armour.
Apple pies, jack o'lanterns, a harvest moon, woolly sweaters and rubber boots. These are some of my fall memories. What are yours? Email me and share some of your fall stories.
